Watoto Book Bus is designed to foster development in literacy, reading comprehension, and critical thinking, and to expose young readers to the African literary tradition. Our bus will be home to dozens of books, and will pop up at various schools, churches, and community centers to engage in fun and interactive reading activities!
Watoto Book Bus is funded in part by the East River Community Investment Fund Grant and is in partnership with Afrikanah Book Club.

How it Works
Parking and Logistics
The bus comes to your community! To bring the bus, your location must have ample space and a safe area for the bus to park as it remains stationary. The bus doesn’t transport passengers. Once the bus arrives, students will board the bus to begin their literary session. Children remain seated during their session. The bus can accommodate 20 children at once.
Sessions and Curriculum
The sessions last 90 minutes, and the curriculum is best suited for children ages 7-13 or grades 2-8. Students will be guided through literary activities curated and facilitated by Afrikanah Book Club, focusing on literature written by Black authors. Sessions focus on activities that foster various elements of literacy including comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and writing, in addition to critical thinking. Supplies
The bus is stocked with books written by Black authors. These are utilized during the sessions but cannot be removed from the bus. The bus includes WiFi and e-readers, and your registration fee covers additional supplies such as paper, pencils, and folders. Students will keep the activities they complete.
