Black HistoryBlack history in American schools is often very biased, limited, and sometimes, nonexistent. As a result, American children matriculate through schools with little to no understanding of the plethora of contributions of people of African descent to this country and to the globe. This is a debilitating to this country and to the world, with black youth being the most negatively affected.

African Cultural ArtsAs the cornerstone of self-knowledge and understanding, the Re-Education Project’s curriculum delves deeply into the rich and diverse cultures of various African countries. Participants come to understand themselves more intently by connecting directly to African heritages, and by learning their customs and traditions. Through The Re-Education Project, participants learn and perform traditional dances and songs, study of African ethnic groups and languages, and absorb and implement customs, including traditional attire and observing important days of the year.

EntrepreneurshipStudents who participate in TREP will also be able to develop and grow their financial literacy through a unique entrepreneurship program. This is designed to increase students’ knowledge of finances and economics, support their critical thinking development, and to expose them to cooperative economics, Corporate America, banks, credit, and more. In addition to this, students will complete a program in which they learn how to start and successfully run their own businesses. It is designed to counter the lack of financial literacy and business development in African American communities.

Social JusticeThrough an interactive and hands-on curriculum, students will build on their knowledge of black history through a curriculum on social activism and community engagement, with special emphasis on Slave Resiliency, the Civil Rights Movement, African Revolutions, Black Power Movement, and Black Lives Matter. In addition to this, participants will learn about systems of power, the political process, cooperative economics, and how to create and implement solutions to the issues most important to them and their communities.

LiteracyAs a complement to the interactive Black History Unit and Social Justice Unit, students will devote time to reading and analyzing relevant text through a unique book club. Participants will implement skills to develop and strengthen literacy and critical thinking.

Social IntelligenceStudents who participate in TREP will also be able to experience the social etiquette program. This is designed to enhance students’ understanding of social intelligence, professionalism, and etiquette, equipping them to go out into society successfully. It is designed to counter the negative behavior and manners that prevail in popular culture, social media, and at school (including bullying).
