OVERVIEW

Akwaaba Program

The Akwaaba Program is a program for international and first generation citizens who are Houston-based college students (juniors and seniors) and graduate students. Rooted in the practice of akwaaba, the Twi (Ghana) word for “welcome,” this program is designed to provide a warm welcome and support to Black immigrants and those who are first generation citizens; to ease the transition of immigration; to orient them to the experiences, history, and culture of African Americans; and to promote sharing and deepen the connection between the two groups. The program includes weekly sessions, activities, and field trips.

Students of all majors and fields are eligible, however, the program is only open to students who both:

  • Identify as one of the following: Black, African, Afro-Latino, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian

AND

  • Are citizens of or are children of parents who are citizens of countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America


Fellowship Program

The Fellowship Program is a program for college students (juniors and seniors) and graduate students studying fields in the Humanities, Arts, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Business. Utilizing TREP’s Afrocentric curriculum, fellows facilitate its youth programs, including administering all activities and engaging with the youth.


Internship Program

The Internship Program is a remote program for college students (juniors and seniors) and graduate students studying fields in the Humanities, Arts, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Business/Nonprofit Management. Interns are responsible for assisting with program coordination; providing administrative support to the Executive Director, staff, and fellows; assisting with grant writing and fundraising; and other administrative tasks as assigned. This program is best suited for individuals interested in nonprofit management.

Ideal candidates will have a major/background in one of the aforementioned fields; an invested interest in supporting the mission of The Re-Education Project and its commitment to the Black community; excellent written, communication, organization, and time management skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to take initiative, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines; and proficiency in Google Drive programs. Additionally, being detail-oriented, proactive, flexible, and adaptable are requirements for this role.
